The Republican Crest is actually taken from the Habsburger Coat of Arms. It is not just an eagle, it is a socalled "Habicht" of which there in earlier times were plenty living in the Alps.
On the 26th of October we celebrate, that a treaty with The Soviet Union in 1955 freed Austria of the last foreign occupation. The Austrians got their freedom, and The Soviet Union got a hell of a lot of Austrian oil.
It is my sincere hope, that my beloved homecountry, Denmark, soon will get a celebration of equal importance to ordinary people.
After all in Europe only Albania and Denmark are still without enforced Human Rights.
